Soil health is where the fibre story actually starts

Organic certification tells you what wasn't used on a crop. Regenerative farming asks a bigger question: did growing this fibre leave the land better than it found it? Here's what that looks like in practice, and who's verified to be doing it.

The principles

What "regenerative" covers, fibre by fibre

Wool

Rotational grazing

Moving flocks between paddocks so pasture is never grazed to bare earth. Rested grass grows deeper roots, pulling more carbon into the soil and improving how much water the land can hold — while supporting more insect and bird life than continuously short-cropped fields.

Cotton

No-till & cover cropping

Leaving soil structure undisturbed between seasons, and planting cover crops in the off-season rather than leaving fields bare. Both practices rebuild soil carbon and reduce the erosion and water loss that heavy tillage causes.

Linen

Crop rotation

Flax is already one of the lower-input crops grown in Europe. Regenerative flax farming adds deliberate rotation with nitrogen-fixing crops to rebuild soil fertility naturally, cutting the need for added fertiliser further.

Who's verifying the claim

"Regenerative" isn't yet a single legal standard the way "organic" is in the UK and EU — so the certifying body behind the claim is what tells you whether it's been checked.

Pasture for Life

UK — livestock & wool

Works directly with British farmers transitioning to 100% pasture-fed, rotationally grazed systems. The certification behind several UK wool brands' regenerative commitments, including Peregrine's move to fully regenerative British wool.

Land to Market · EOV

Global — outcomes-based

Ecological Outcome Verification physically measures results on the land — soil carbon, plant diversity, water infiltration — rather than auditing a checklist of practices. Used to certify meat, dairy and wool.

Regenerative Cotton Standard

Global — cotton

Covers no-till farming, cover cropping and reduced synthetic inputs specifically for cotton growing regions, developed by the Aid by Trade Foundation.

Fibershed · Climate Beneficial

Regional fibre systems

Certifies that a textile's production actively sequesters carbon rather than merely reducing emissions — currently strongest in wool, cotton, flax and hemp regional supply chains.

Why British wool has a head start

UK sheep farming is largely grass-based already, which sits closer to regenerative principles than grain-fed systems used elsewhere — though good grazing management still has to be done deliberately, not assumed.

What it doesn't cover

Regenerative grazing or growing addresses the farm end of the supply chain. Dyeing, transport and how the finished piece is made still matter — it's one part of an ethical fibre's story, not the whole of it.
