Why what touches your skin for eight hours a night is worth caring about

01 — Health

Breathable, not synthetic

Linen, cotton and wool are moisture-wicking and breathable, which is why they're linked to fewer skin irritations than polyester or acrylic — especially for eczema-prone skin, night sweats, and babies. Wool is also naturally flame-resistant, so mattresses and bedding can skip the chemical flame retardants used in synthetic fills.

02 — Environment

Biodegradable, low-input

Flax (linen) needs little water or pesticide and every part of the plant is used. Organic cotton uses far less water and no synthetic pesticides compared with conventional cotton. All three fibres are biodegradable — unlike polyester, which sheds microplastics into water with every wash.

03 — Longevity

Built to outlast the trend cycle

Natural fibres soften and improve with age rather than pilling and degrading. A well-made linen sheet or wool mattress can last decades, which — cost per wear and per night — often makes it cheaper than replacing synthetics every few years.

Linen

Made from the flax plant, linen is one of the oldest and lowest-impact textiles in the world — strong, naturally antibacterial, and it gets softer with every wash.

Activewear & Swimwear

The hardest category for natural fibre — stretch and chlorine resistance have historically meant synthetics. Here's what's genuinely closest to natural, and honest about where it isn't.

Being straight with you: almost no swimwear on the market is 100% natural fibre — stretch requires elastane, and most "eco" swimwear is recycled nylon (Econyl/Repreve) rather than natural. Swim Good is the exception — the UK's first swimwear brand woven from 100% OEKO-TEX certified cotton using a 3D-loop weave for stretch, with no polyester at all. For activewear, merino and organic cotton are widely and genuinely available.

Hemp & Bamboo

Two plant fibres worth knowing apart — hemp is a genuinely low-impact natural fibre; "bamboo fabric" usually isn't quite what it sounds like.

Being straight with you: hemp grows with very little water or pesticide and produces a strong, durable, naturally antibacterial fabric — one of the most genuinely low-impact fibres available. "Bamboo fabric," however, is almost always bamboo viscose/rayon — the plant itself grows fast with no pesticides, but turning it into fabric involves heavy chemical processing, so it doesn't carry the same low-impact credentials the marketing implies. The exception is bamboo lyocell (a closed-loop process that recaptures the chemicals used), which is a genuine improvement — worth checking for on the label. Full detail in the Fibre Guide.

Certifications worth actually checking for

GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard

The gold standard for organic cotton and linen: no synthetic pesticides, no toxic dyes, and audited fair labour conditions through the full supply chain.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Tests the finished textile for harmful substances — useful even on non-organic pieces, and standard on most of the brands listed here.

Non-mulesed / mulesing-free wool

Confirms the wool was sourced without the mulesing practice used on some merino sheep. Always worth checking on wool and merino garments.

European Flax® / Masters of Linen

Traces linen back to flax grown in Western Europe under strict environmental standards — a good proxy for both quality and low food-miles.
